Chew Lips are not quite your run of the mill indie band – when the trio joined forces little more than a year ago, they only had one goal in mind: not to sound like every other guitar band on the radio. So far, critics would agree, they seem to have found the perfect balance of vintage and contemporary with their Casiotone beats and frontwoman Tigs’ enormous voice.
“We had no idea what we wanted to sound like, only
what we didn’t want to sound like,” Tigs reports of the band’s inception. “And I think that helped us. We didn’t know what we wanted
to do, so we just did everything.”
The band’s first gig happened to be at a friend’s house party in New
Cross, and from atop a washing machine Tigs did what she does best: titillated the crowd, even if she couldn’t remember all the
words to the newly written songs. Throughout Chew Lips’ short history together, they’ve tinkered with every instrument they could
get their hands on, resulting in the legendary Steve Lamacq declaring them to be his favorite band of 2008 as well as the best
unsigned band in the nation (they’ve since signed on to indie label Kitsuné).
Tigs is the
undeniable focal point of the band’s live shows, and the Lovebox writes: “And she does not disappoint: live, she is a force of
nature, prowling the stage, crawling on the floor, drawing the audience in with every word, and challenging them not to enjoy
themselves.”
And the singer confirms: “If I’m having fun, the audience will have fun. I’m not going to stand there pretending
I’m too cool to look at the audience, I don’t know what the f*ck that’s about.”
