Chew Lips have been giving interviews almost since their inception – they wrote ten songs during their first rehearsal and as they began performing soon after a buzz quickly developed around their synth pop tracks and high energy performances.
Pinglewood writes: “They don’t understand that Danny Dyer is the new Laurence Olivier, but
Kitsune’s latest signings, Chew Lips, do know a thing or two about soaring, heartfelt casio-pop.”
In an interview with
the blog, Chew Lips’ James gave readers three facts about the band, named two songs that inspire him, and detailed one wish he has
(“Cheese on toast please and maybe a cup of tea?”).
Unsurprisingly, the trio that makes up Chew Lips brings together
completely different tastes in music: but during studio sessions they appear to effortlessly churn out songs. In fact, they’d
written so many that when it came time to select what would go on their album the process was extremely difficult.
James is
inspired by Sonic Youth’s “Total Trash.” He said: “I love Sonic Youth and was reminded of this particular one because it was played
on some shitty comedy awards thing as Jasper Carrott walked on to collect his lifetime achievement award… please! I nearly cried
with shame. It’s a cool song. And they have millions of cool songs.”
As half of the band’s instrumentalists, James’
taste in music brings an important component to Chew Lip’s future classic pop flavor.
He also discussed the origins of the
band’s name: “Chew Lips is a character in the Brendan Behan book, Borstal Boy. They’re now apparently making a film of Borstal Boy
in that Hollywood. It has Danny Dyer in it as the eponymous Chew Lips – we fear this may signal the end of the band….”
